Statistical Office of the SR published results on homeless people

The Statistical Office of the Slovak Republic has published results on homeless people based on the 2021 Population and Housing Census.

Methodological basis for identifying homeless people

For the purposes of the 2021 Population and Housing Census, the Statistical Office of the Slovak Republic has defined groups of "homeless people" (HP) in the context of international recommendations.

Concept and methodology of the census allowed for the quantification of the secondary homeless, residents who use different types of temporary accommodation and often move between accommodation such as a shelter, halfway home, emergency housing equipment or reside in non-conventional housing (recreational object; emergency object, not intended for housing; mobile homes). The bottom line is that secondary homelessness is not just a matter for individuals; couples, families with children may also be without suitable accommodation.

As of 1 January 2021, there were 71 076 homeless people in Slovakia

By gender, men predominate among them. Almost 80 % of the secondary homeless are of productive age. According to the 2021 Census, the highest number of HP, over 10 thousand, is in the Nitra, Košice and Banská Bystrica regions. According to 2021 Census, the districts of Prievidza, Martin, Prešov and Košice II have the highest number of HP, over 2.5 thousand.
