The number of the singles slightly increased

Even before 2011, the composition of the SR population according to marital status was characterized by a predominance of married men and married women. In 2011, for the first time in the history of the censuses, the share of single people in Slovakia was higher than the share of married people. The results of the 2021 Census show that the proportion of single and divorced residents continues to increase.

A significant demographic phenomenon in recent decades is the increase in the number of marriages terminated by divorce and the postponement of marriages. These demographic phenomena affect not only the structure of the population according to marital status, but also the intensity of demographic reproduction of society.

According to the results of the 2021 Census, the share of divorced is 8.2 %. Compared to 2011, it increased by 0.6 percentage points (in 2011 the share of the divorced was 7.6 %). The share of single slightly increased from 42.3 % in 2011 to 44.4% in 2021. While the share of the single and the divorced is slightly increasing, the share of the married has slightly decreased, from 41.0 % in 2011 to 40.0 % in 2021. The share of the widowers and the widows changed only by 0.2 percentage points, from 7.2 % in 2011 to 7.0 % in 2021.
