Žilinský kraj with the highest share of Slovak ethnicity

Based on the 2021 Population and Housing Census results, 83,8% of the population, which represents almost 4,6 million permanent residents, declared Slovak ethnicity in the question "What is your ethnicity?". 600 thousand residents declared themselves belonging to ethnic minorities, which makes up 10,8% of the total permanent residence. There were 422,1 thousand Hungarians, 67,2 thousand Romani, 29 thousand Czechs and 23,7 thousand Ruthenians. Shares of other ethnicities are less than 0,2%.

In order to obtain a comprehensive picture of the ethnic composition of the Slovak population, for the first time in history, the residents could state their affiliation to other ethnicity in the question "Are you affiliated with another ethnicity?”. In total, 306,2 thousand residents countrywide declared another ethnicity, i.e. 5,6% of the permanent resident population. As another ethnicity, 55,5 thousand residents stated Slovak, 39,8 thousand Ruthenian, 34,1 thousand Hungarian, 89 thousand Romani and 16,7 thousand Czech. Romani and Ruthenian ethnicities represent higher shares in case of marking other ethnicities.
