What is the
benefit of census?
The population and housing census as the only survey enables the involvement of all residents of the Slovak Republic. The census will provide irreplaceable information about the state of society, its demographic, socio-economic and cultural structures, on the households of the population and their housing. Many of the surveyed data in the population and housing census are unique and cannot be obtained to the same extent from any other sources. The benefits of census
What makes the 2021 Census different?
For the first time, houses and dwellings were counted through municipalities
The Housing census was conducted by the municipality or, in case of the capital city of Bratislava and Košice, urban part, i.e. it was performed without the participation of the population. The Housing census was carried out exclusively in electronic form, using the Electronic System for the Housing Census. This electronic system was available to the municipality during the entire period of the population and housing census. For the purpose of the 2021 Census, different types of data are collected such as: type of ownership of the apartment, location of the apartment in the house, floor area of the apartment, number of living rooms in the apartment, type of heating, energy source used for heating. The full list of the surveyed variables is provided in the Measure of the Statistical Office of the Slovak Republic on the characteristics and structure of surveyed data.
The existing registers was used for the first time
In 2021, for the first time in a history of Slovakia, the census integrated data obtained from selected administrative data sources and registers and from the population. These are the following registers: Register of Natural Persons and Register of Addresses of the Ministry of the Interior of the SR, Central Registry of Public Health Insurers of the Office for Health care Surveillance, Social Insurance Information System, Information System of the Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Sport of the Slovak Republic, Information System of the Centre of Labour, Social Affairs and Family, Information System of the Financial Directorate of the SR, Information System of the Office of Geodesy, Cartography and Cadastre Authority of the SR, Information System of the Ministry of the Environment of the SR, Records of Accused and Convicted Persons of the Prison and Judicial Guards Corps.
The Population and Housing census 2021 was exclusively an electronic census. Data collection took place electronically through e-forms. The electronic census will contribute to a more efficient use of the existing resources, to a reduction of the administrative burden on the population, to the improvement of the data obtained with the possibility of immediate and direct control, as well as to the acceleration of the processing of the data obtained.
Reduced burden on the population
The resident was participated in the population and housing census. The resident only participated in the population census and was able to count anywhere from any device with an Internet connection through multiple channels that was available. Increased attention was paid to the residents who did not have the necessary equipment with the possibility of Internet connection or did not know how to work with it. The resident answered the questions via the census form, which contains fewer questions compared to the previous censuses.
The simplest and most comprehensive census
In the Population and Housing Census, the data from the existing administrative sources and registers were fully utilized, in combination with the data obtained from municipalities and the population, thus led to the enhancement of the quality of the data obtained. Electronic data collection is a modern, accessible, fast and secure way of obtaining information, without disturbing the private zone of the population with the possibility of fast data processing. The census provides reliable, comparable and interconnected data and information on the state of the society, its structures and housing.
Unique data from the 2021 Census
The results of the Population and Housing Census will be an irreplaceable source of information in all spheres of life, the public and private sectors, the professional and lay public. Unique and important information about the population, their households and housing will be available for the whole population of the Slovak Republic. The census data are a basis and starting point to correctly understand the functioning of society, to forecast its further development, to take qualified opinions on social and economic issues. Their importance is also underlined by the fact that many of the surveyed data in the population and housing census are unique and cannot be obtained or updated to the same extent from other sources. In addition, they are often the only statistical data at the local level.
